SKD vs CKD Forklift Kits: Cut Freight & Duty

SKD or CKD forklift kits? How knock-down shipping cuts freight and, in many markets, import duty — and which kit suits your local assembly capability.

SKD (semi-knocked-down) ships a forklift partly assembled; CKD (completely-knocked-down) ships it fully dismantled for local assembly. Both cut freight by packing more compactly, and in some markets they lower import duty, because knock-down kits can be classified — and taxed — under a different tariff line from a fully built truck. The saving is not automatic: it depends on your country’s tariff schedule, and US Section 301 is charged by HS code, so a kit does not bypass it — each part’s HS line must be confirmed with your broker before order. The trade-off is the assembly work at your end: SKD needs less, CKD needs more, including trained staff and tooling. This guide compares the two, shows where the savings come from, and helps you match the kit to your local capability. HONGLI builds at its plant in Tai’an, Shandong, since 2012, and supplies SKD and CKD kits with assembly support, parts planning and documentation. Confirm the duty treatment for your country with your broker before you choose.

SKD vs CKD

SKD (semi-knocked-down) CKD (completely-knocked-down)
Assembly state Partly assembled Fully dismantled
Local assembly needed Less More (staff + tooling)
Freight saving Good Best
Possible duty saving Some markets Some markets (often more)
Best for Light local assembly Full local assembly / duty rules

Where the savings come from

Two places. Freight: a knock-down kit packs tighter, so you ship more units per container. Duty: some countries set a lower tariff line for parts or kits than for finished trucks, to encourage local assembly. The duty saving is country-specific, and it does not avoid US Section 301, which applies by HS code on China origin — confirm each part’s tariff line with your broker; do not assume a saving.

Which kit suits you

SKD if you want a fast, light build with basic tools. CKD if you have the staff and tooling for full assembly, or if your country’s duty rules reward it. HONGLI provides assembly support, spare-parts planning and technical documentation for both.
